There are conservative procedures of dentistry, responsible for removing all the pulp ducts of a damaged piece until its prompt reconstruction. These are known as multiradicular root canals.
However, these treatments are much more complex, since they focus on solving more roots or ducts, being their cost also much more expensive when compared to other types of dental endodontics.

What Is Known As A Multiradicular Tooth?
They are those teeth that have more than one root in their pipes and are divided between:
- First, second and third premolars.
- Molars with two roots in the lower zone.
- Molars with three roots in the upper zone.
- Premolars with two to three, or only one root, also located in the upper area of the oral cavity.
Each tooth may have a different number of ducts, which do not have to be similar with the number of roots. Therefore, this type of dental endodontics will depend on the number of roots that the piece has.
All the roots of a tooth will have at least one root canal. However, there are teeth characteristically developed to be able to opt for the growth of more than one.
How Is The Treatment Performed? Multiradicular Root Canals
Multiradicular treatment is performed following the following steps:
- Anaesthesia area
The anesthesia is determined and placed in the area topically. After ten to twenty minutes have elapsed, the dentist will perform a sensitivity test and inject local anesthesia, so that the area is completely asleep.
- Opening of the oral cavity
Once numb, an opening is made in the affected area to achieve a better view of the pulp area. In this way, the number of ducts contained in the affected part is determined. Remember that these tend to communicate with the rest of the body.
- Find the ducts
In this step, the type of tooth affected is taken into account, since the number of ducts is not always the same as the number of roots. However, the dentist, through an intraoral x-ray, will evaluate how to access the canals of the pulp area without affecting any nerve.
- Set the lengths
By knowing and locating these ducts, their distance is determined through an apex locator, which indicates exactly the millimeters of the duct.
- Duct maneuvering
To maneuver the duct, the necessary dental treatments must be applied until there is no possibility or evidence of any type of bacteria that can cause reinfection.
This is achieved through multiple files manipulated by a circulatory mechanism that surrounds the tooth to emit a number of favorable ducts for its filling.
However, between each change of files or sandpaper, a sodium hypochlorite substance will be used to help with the disinfection process.
- Duct sealing and cementing
In this step, a closure of the ducts is carried out by means of a thermoplastic and cemented material, which will penetrate until it covers or achieves the same conclusive distance at the beginning of the treatment.
- Dental repairs
However, you will have to be careful for a time defined by the dentist in charge of the case, at least until the effects of anesthesia have ceased. After a few hours, you will be able to continue with your usual life without any problem.
Do Multiradicular Root Canals Hurt?
This method of multiradicular root canals does not hurt, because it is usually performed under local and topical anesthesia. However, it may depend on the situation or severity of each specific patient.
One of the discomforts that can manifest itself will be the pricking sensation when injecting the local anesthesia, but it will not be so acute, since previously you will have been anesthetized topically. This situation is usually very common in dental treatments.
Three or four days after treatment, you may feel slight discomfort because of the maneuver exerted on the tissue that is in the intervened area or those variations in the affected piece.
However, these pains can be alleviated with analgesic medication, which will be prescribed by the dentist. Of course, in case the pain does not subside, it is best to go immediately to your dentist to evaluate the situation of the problem.
Who Can Undergo The Treatment Of Multiradicular Root Canals?
Anyone who is suffering from deep cavities that have damaged the nerve of the same, as well as bacteria, damage from trauma and / or abrasion, can undergo multiradicular root canals.
The function of this method is to eradicate the affected pulp and seal the ducts of the same, in which the nerves or blood vessels of the tooth are located. Remember that the root canal is responsible for connecting with the maxillary bone!
