Curettage: Scaling and root planing

Keep your gums healthy

At David Cardona Dental Clinic, we perform scaling and root planing as a preventive technique to avoid the progression of periodontal disease, as well as a treatment to control the already established disease. The technique consists of deep cleaning with anesthesia of all the tartar that is under the gum, using specific dental curettes.

It is important to note that scaling and root planing is not an exclusive treatment to treat periodontal disease, but is used in conjunction with other techniques such as oral hygiene education, the use of mouth rinses and the application of fluoride. In addition, periodic check-ups are essential to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment and to make any necessary adjustments.

What does scaling and root planing consist of?

Dental cleaning is a fundamental technique to improve the oral health of any patient. Oral cleaning serves to reinforce the patient’s daily oral hygiene by brushing and flossing. However, in some cases, the accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar can be so excessive that a deeper cleaning is required.

At David Cardona Dental Clinic, our periodontal specialists perform professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar from the patient’s mouth. For a complete prophylaxis, our hygienists will use ultrasound, prophylaxis brushes with polishing pastes, chlorhexidine spray and topical fluoride. Always after a prophylaxis, our hygienist will explain to the patient the most appropriate brushing technique for his case. In 30-40 minutes, the patient can once again look and enjoy a cleaner and healthier mouth.

In cases where the patient has not been cleaned for a long time or has excessive tartar, the treatment is usually divided into two sessions. In the patient’s first visit, the left side of the mouth is cleaned, and in the second session, the right side is thoroughly cleaned.

On the other hand, there are a number of gum diseases that are often the result of poor oral hygiene. If the patient accumulates bacterial plaque, caries may occur or periodontal diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis may appear. These patients need a special type of dental cleaning, which is root scaling or curettage.

Scaling and root planing is a procedure that is indicated to treat periodontal disease in combination with other treatments. It is performed under local anesthesia and a combination of different instruments such as ultrasound, curettes and chlorhexidine spray is used to perform this treatment.

In addition, it is important to note that this treatment is effective as long as the patient understands that for long-term maintenance of gum health he/she must improve hygiene techniques and attend periodontal check-ups and maintenance appointments 2 or 3 times a year.
